Patrick W. Duval

Founding Partner

Patrick Duval is a founding partner of Duval & Stachenfeld, chair of the Corporate Practice Group and a member of the Bankruptcy and Business Reorganization Practice Group. He also serves as chair of the NextGen Practice Group.  The NextGen Group's goals are simple: (i) provide families with access to investment opportunities, and (ii) create customized structures and practices to preserve and create multi-generational wealth and achieve corporate, family, and social objectives.

Prior to starting the Firm, Mr. Duval practiced at Latham & Watkins from 1988 to 1997, where he was a partner specializing in corporate and finance transactions. While at Latham & Watkins, Mr. Duval’s experience included a wide array of complex domestic and international transactions, including mergers and acquisitions (including leveraged buyouts and tender offers), corporate finance (public and private equity and debt offerings), commercial bank loans, structured finance, and restructurings and workouts. As part of his practice at Latham & Watkins, Mr. Duval’s representations included (i) investment banks and underwriters such as Goldman Sachs, DLJ, Drexel Burnham, Kidder Peabody, Bear Stearns, Morgan Stanley, Alex Brown and Lehman Brothers, (ii) leveraged buyout funds and other investors such as KKR, Apollo and Belkorp Industries, (iii) companies such as RJR, Howmet Corporation, Days Inn and PIMCO, (iv) commercial banks such as Chase Manhattan and Credit Lyonnais, and (v) creditors’ committees for bankruptcies such as Continental Airlines and Western Union.

Mr. Duval also specializes in the acquisition and disposition of distressed companies and assets through out-of-court transactions as well as bankruptcy proceedings.

Since founding the Firm, Mr. Duval has continued to represent corporations, banks, investment funds and other investors and borrowers. Mr. Duval has also represented early stage technology companies, venture capitalists and company incubators. Combining his experiences at Latham & Watkins and the Firm, Mr. Duval has the expertise and skills to represent a client in almost any corporate or finance transaction.

Mr. Duval graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1986 (Highest Honors) and the University of Texas at Austin with a B.B.A. in Accounting and Finance (Honors) in 1983. Following law school, Mr. Duval clerked for Chief Justice John Hill of the Texas Supreme Court from 1986 to 1987.
